After being diagnosed with a left shoulder injury last week, physical therapy was prescribed. After the first session I was unsure about the outcome. My therapist, Derek, didn't have me do much and never wanted me to reach 'pain'. Of course I thought that reaching pain meant that I was going to get better, so I worked through the pain. He gave me one exercise to do at home several times a day....so I did the exercise at home several times a day.....in pain. During my second visit I learned that the pain is NOT what I need. We began the exercises and I tried to keep them pain free, and did well. Since this was my first experience with PT I was surprised when he had me lay down and he began to move my arm up, down, around, back and forth. Somehow though, he always knew when to 'stop' before the movement caused pain. This manipulation went on for a few minutes and actually felt good. My shoulder didn't hurt and it felt better when we were finished. I have continued to do the at-home exercises and haven't experienced the same pain. I am actually looking forward to going back tomorrow....and my shoulder healing.
Never being a fan of manipulation and chiropractic medicine....this all comes as quite a surprise to me, but now....I highly recommend it!
